Project Description

This new, five-story addition to P.S. 70, a primary school in Astoria, Queens, opened in September 2014 to accommodate an additional 400 students from grades Pre-K through 5. The building is distinguished by a gently undulating façade that sensitively responds to its mid-block residential setting and uses innovative sun shading over the south facing windows.

The new building is approximately 60,000 SF and includes new classrooms, support spaces, art and music rooms, and a 5,400 SF gymnasium. A new elevator serves all floors of both the new and existing buildings and new landscaped outdoor areas have been created. Existing bathrooms and mechanical systems were also rehabilitated.

The project complies with the NYC Green Schools Guide and Rating System.
