Project Description
Although the site is a small residential lot in a traditional neighborhood, the rear of the lot ends in a 40-foot bluff overlooking Ranger Creek below and hundreds of acres of wooded conservation land beyond. The client researched architectural prefab houses but found they were beyond her budget. Our goal was to design a compact modern house that would be less expensive to custom-build than buying a similar-sized architectural prefab.
The design solution ties together the main elements — street, carport, house, and creek — with a linear circulation axis. It creates varied outdoor spaces, takes advantage of the creek frontage and the views beyond, and addresses the need for privacy from the street and the neighbors next door.
