Project Description

When a homeowner loves to cook but hates being in their kitchen, it really can cause some distress. The clients had some "nightmare-ish" pink-purple tiles, as they said and the space was depressing. Both of the clients wanted to be able to enjoy their kitchen and asked us to help them design an amazing space. Since the home was built in 1913, it still has many of the original charms and quirks. This includes original hardwood flooring that is uneven in certain spots and possible surprises behind the walls. Thankfully the kitchen had been remodeled in the past and the knob and tube wiring had already been replaced. We installed a beam when there was once a wall between the kitchen and butler's pantry. This allowed the homeowner's to put in a peninsula where the wall was but still have an open feel. Storage was a necessity so a custom cabinet was installed next to the refrigerator for pull out storage. The main challenge that the homeowner's had to overcome wasn't so much the design, but the color. At first, neither of them was excited about the idea of having an orange kitchen. With some encouragement from our designer and 3-D renderings to help seal the deal, they decided to give it a shot. They sorted through at least 10 different shades of orange – from "A Clockwork Orange" to Whoppers. Our designer wanted to make sure the color and design stayed within the architectural style of the home so they chose "Determined Orange" from Sherwin-Williams. With the help of accents like a stainless steel peg wall for pot and pan storage to a upgraded, leathered countertop finish, the home really speaks volumes. There is a balance between modern and old-fashioned. The homeowners' goal was to have a space where they enjoyed spending time and now they can't wait to get up in the morning, make a cup of coffee, and just smile in their beautiful new space.
