Project Description

UrbanWorks was invited to join the Metropolitan Planning Council to develop a vision scheme for the adaptive reuse of the Old Cook County Hospital on Chicago’s West Side. The proposal imagines two million square feet of development, including the renovation of the existing historic structure as an office building and extensive new construction for a variety of uses. The open space in front of the building becomes a landscaped park with a landscape bridge over the Eisenhower Expressway, linking the new development to the Malcolm X College campus. A hotel, school, child care center, assisted living, retail, and student housing are arranged to provide a large-scale mixed-use solution that sets the Old Cook County Hospital as the epicenter of a new civic hub for Chicago.
