Project Description

Only steps away from Lincoln Center will you find this Pied-à-Terre of unexpected delight. Entering through glass revolving doors into an impressive lobby that is clad in onyx and custom wood veneer, you are swept onto the elevators and off to the 22nd floor. The owners are a husband and wife duo and executive partners for a successful wellness product company. The husband is also a classical musician. They serendipitously became clients of Claus F. Rademacher, Architects after visiting the construction site of a neighboring apartment within the building and asking for the architect that designed the space. This being one of their three domestic residences, the others located in Miami and Southern California, they expressed the importance of this home having a modern, yet timeless New York City flair and the need for the perfect architect and design team to make this dream come true.

If your eyes are keen to it, you will notice upon entering the space that the bleached white oak floors are set at an angle, a design decision with purposeful intention. This angle mimics that of the iconic New York City street grid located just outside of these walls; one of the many details that makes this project so unique. Limited to 750 s.f., every decision made was key in achieving the desires of the clients: a feeling of a substantial entry, a kitchen that is at the same time open and separate, spacious living and dining area, and a luxurious bathroom and bedroom complete with ample storage. We allowed the spaces to interact with each other by creating custom cabinetry equipped with sleek sliding metal and glass doors shared between rooms to designate locations, making for a less compartmentalized feeling that traditional partitions tend to create.

Hidden within the cream lacquer cabinetry in the south eastern part of the home is a well-outfitted kitchen equipped with high-end Miele appliances and custom high-gloss lacquer cabinets finished in a daring, but subtle, lavender hue. Stunning honed marble begins at the counter and cascades up through the backsplash. Directly opposite of the kitchen and through the hall is a beautifully secluded gem, the lavishly designed bathroom accessed through a custom metal and glass door. You are immediately enveloped in a space that shimmers in Dolomitti marble with staggered rose mirrored slivers on the floor, cleft Thassos mosaic featured walls from Artistic Tile, and finished with rose gold Dornbracht plumbing fixtures and matching hardware. The custom lacquered vanity and large framed mirror anchor the room with beautiful crystal-like sconces from The Bright Group. The cabinetry separating public and private spaces is a rift American Walnut that houses various functional components such as closets, storage, a concealed bar and wine refrigerator, and television niches in both the living room and bedroom – all while allowing the area to retain its elegant aesthetic. The living room niche is surfaced with a three-dimensional metal mosaic from Porcelanosa and serves as the television backdrop. Sofa from B&B Italia, customized Doris Leslie Blau area rug and Kravet drapes, with a rare sculptural-like Wendell Castle coffee table that helps soften the clean lines of the architecture and distinguishes the living from dining space, making it a true conversation piece. The cylindrical glass top dining table on a curvilinear stainless-steel base by The Bright Group is paired with Natuzzi Italian leather chairs and centered on a custom bookcase, anchoring this dining area. The bedroom is accessible from both sides of the room, enhancing the sense of the space and light. The Poliform bed is woven suede with warm rosewood side tables from KGBL, Cataldi ivory leather reading lights set upon an eye-catching Bradley USA wallpaper with angular rose gold lines, threading all materials throughout the entire space together in one room. The custom cabinet that encloses the new air-conditioning system also serves as a writing surface, complete with a SKRAM saddle stool, creating the perfect spot to take in the expansive metal and glass fenestration and New York City streets.
