FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
The capital of Greenland is in rapid development. New commercial, cultural and residential buildings are shooting up in different parts of the city along with infrastructural improvements. The Cultural and Commercial Complex will function as the new center of gravity in Nuuk and the “glue” that binds the city together. The project consists of 3 parts: National gallery of art, a national football stadium and a commercial center. In 2011 BIG won the architectural competition for the Greenland National Gallery of Art and initially the building was planned for construction on the far west coast of Nuuk. As part of the CCC project it will be relocated to a more prominent site in the urban context as it gets more exposure and becomes visible from all parts of the city. Its unique character will contribute to the identity of the harbour. For the national stadium we propose a large dome-shaped roof structure which frames the views of the surroundings from inside the building and also shelters the stadium from wind and snow. We imagine a large wooden structure which creates a warm inside as contrast to the rough Greenlandic climate. For the commercial center we propose a radial distribution of colorful pitched-roof houses as celebration of the traditional Greenlandic building typology. The circular courtyard functions both as common space where people can meet, but also as a circulation and parking space. Apart from facing the courtyard, all building units also get a view of the stunning nature surrounding the site.
