Project Description

The new North Washington Street/Charlestown Bridge will replace a century old truss bridge over the Charles River. The new bridge will include wide sidewalks – 12’ and the first cycle track – 7’ in width on a bridge in the City of Boston. Almost 40% of the width of the bridge will be dedicated to pedestrians and bicyclists which will make it try multi-modal and one of the most innovative bridge in the US in this respect. The design of the elegant piers and overall architecture is inspired by the adjacent Zakim bridge without mimicking it to complement rather than detract from the iconic bridge. The new bridge with spans up to 200’ will also include curved overlooks and open space at the center navigation span with seating, a shade structure and landscaping for users to enjoy views of the harbor and the city.
