Project Description

This rehabilitation of a historic railroad facility designed by di Domenico + Partners included the raising and lengthening of existing canopies, new elevators, stairs and ramps, as well as the restoration of the building’s historic public interiors and pedestrian subway. Extensive coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) was handled by dD+P throughout the process. Modifications to existing fabric and new structures on the proposed island platform were explored and drawings that sensitively addressed the historic fabric in accordance with accepted SHPO procedures were developed. Approval from NJ Transit’s Department of Community Affairs (DCA) was also required and its expectations were balanced with SHPO’s to keep the project moving ahead.
