Project Description
It’s smooth sailing for the newly built Motor Yacht “Contraband." The 94-foot motor yacht is the largest sailing vessel built by New England Boatworks. It was built for Charlie Dana, owner of Newport Shipyards.
The project is an example of the challenges in marine architecture and construction. These include custom builds based on curves and angles, the need to maximize living quarters and storage, and meet design and architectural requirements such as ventilation, pipes, electrical, and exhaust systems.
Using a new type of imaging laser scanning technology, the challenges were addressed and the project team was able to increase efficiencies and streamline work, saving significant time, labor and materials architecting and building the interior of the yacht.
The technology was used to capture and document spaces in 3D. The team captured the most precise measurements and collaborated online to confirm the as built. This ensured additional finishing work would not be required because the partitions and mouldings perfectly fit into the yacht.
The durable and rugged world cruising vessel is aluminum, features tugboat-like engines and can cruise at 13 knots.
