Project Description

A short building pad drops off to a steep canyon that makes the building footprint very small and necessitates an open plan to achieve spaciousness and enjoy the views of the canyon. The client is a concrete subcontractor so we made the feature wall panel at the entry door poured in place concrete. His office looks back down the one way street from a corner glass window above the entry. This makes spatial tension as the entry concrete wall and the dissected white plaster box over the garage are held apart with the corner glass. The entry canopy is a focal point because it appears as a cantilevered metal beam holding up the box over the garage. The hip roof, angled gutter / fascia, punched window are familiar, however, the office box over the garage is skewed telling you that angles exist….formed by the string line between existing structures on the canyon as required by the California Coastal Commission.
