Project Description

In this bathroom for a Southern California surfer, contrasting materials create a depth of space, while sculptural relationships between the bathtub and shower work to frame the exterior landscape. This Master bath is a simple, yet thoughtful design that derives from the ideas of the architecture of the house as a whole. The bathroom floats over the yard, the city and the ocean. Upon stepping up into the shower, a perfectly located corner window provides views over the urban landscape to the Pacific Ocean. The built-in bathtub slides out of a floor to ceiling window, and a large glass mirror brings the canyon views deep into the bathroom. The water closet is carefully concealed behind a small pocket door and an over-scaled pocket door (6’ x 8’) to the bedroom creates an open bathroom feel, while simultaneously allowing for privacy. An opaque glass door opens directly to a private outdoor courtyard where an outdoor shower, provides a phenomenal bathing experience and maximizes the climactic advantages of the southern Californian environment.
