Project Description

FROM THE ARCHITECTS:

“Maidan” is a competition entry to the "Heavenly Hundred Memorial" Competition, 2014

The Revolution of Dignity that took place in Kyiv, Ukraine in 2014 was a diverse, yet unifying movement that encompassed the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of an entire nation. It is the goal of this memorial to commemorate the revolution was not a singular event, but rather an expansive movement with its nexus in the Maidan Square. As such, the project began with the hypostyle hall, a typology that emphasizes simultaneously continuity and the individual spatial unit. There was in our minds a direct correspondence to the spirit of the collective…the most important quality of the Maidan Movement.

Experientially, the memorial offers two distinct faces: one, facing the city and offering extraordinary vantages to collectively view the Maidan, and a second offering a sheltered, quiet space for solitary reflection.
