Project Description

Conceived as a major economic driver for New Orleans post-Katrina, the new North Terminal at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) has been called “the most transformative project for New Orleans since the Superdome” by Mayor Landrieu. As part of a joint venture with Atkins, LEO A DALY is working with the New Orleans Aviation Board to develop the long-term program, with a design based on the brownfield expansion north of the existing airport. The effort included the development of four site alternatives for evaluation and identification of a preferred potential terminal development. The site alternatives included the complete refurbishment of the existing terminal in its current location; reconstruction and expansion of the existing terminal in a multi-phase, in place approach; a new terminal facility west of the existing terminal with the closure and potential removal of the existing terminal; and construction of a new terminal building with air-side and land-side improvements on the northern, brownfield side of the airport. After evaluation, the brownfield site was chosen. The conceptual design for the new terminal on this site was developed in collaboration with Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. The new development will include an approximate 650,000-SF terminal of 30 Group III contact gates, which will ultimately be expanded to 42 gates. The design includes the following major components: a 2,000-space parking garage; Interstate-10 highway connection; hotel development site; aircraft apron; Federal Inspection Services (FIS) and swing gates for international traffic; in-line baggage handling system; retail development; consolidated security screening checkpoint; inbound and outbound baggage; airline ticket offices; and ticketing hall.
