Project Description

The site’s proximity to the Midway Airport is both a contextual experience we strongly considered and a source of inspiration for the design. The concept of UPLIFT is infused throughout the building, from the programmatic layout, to the architectural forms and the lasting impressions the space will leave on its occupants.

Taking cues from airplane noise and reverberation, windows and glazing patterns
are placed to represent low and high frequency sound waves that telegraph the
activity levels happening inside the school. The complex will also serve to UPLIFT the surrounding community by providing amenities such as the Black Box Theatre, full size auditorium and two-position gymnasium to enjoy year-round.

The engaging outdoor spaces will serve as a gathering and activity space for the
neighborhood, and as an extension to the neighboring Grimes Elementary School.
