Project Description

FROM THE ARCHITECTS:

Buro Koray Duman was selected to research a new typology of cultural center and design a 100,000 sq ft prototype in the United States. The institution will provide recreation, culinary, art, education, retail, and office spaces with a total of 100,000 square feet.

Research on historic Islamic Cultural Centers (Kulliyes) as well as contemporary religious centers (JCC, YMCA, etc) provided us with the idea of a vertical public landscape to create an open, transparent and welcoming space. The public landscape wraps around the solid, stacked volumes inside, carving at necessary public volumes; auditorium, library, galleries etc. thus creating a new kind of cultural center.
