Project Description

Greenbriar Local Park is a 25-acre new park located in the North Potomac area of Maryland within the Travilah planning area.

The design challenge was to create a local park with a rustic appearance that consisted of a small entry parking lot, accessible walking trails with special paving, passive seating and picnic terraces with Trellis structures, a themed children’s play area, a picnic pavilion, visible bioretention areas with educational exhibits, soccer field, basketball court, volleyball court and natural tree planting areas.

The original facilities plan was completed and approved in 2005. Hord Coplan Macht, as lead landscape architect, was challenged with the task of leading a team of architects and engineers, as well as the Maryland National Capital Parks & Planning Commission (MNCPPC) project team through the all phases of the design process and construction administration.

In addition, Hord Coplan Macht led the design team and MNCPPC through the sustainable sites initiative evaluation process. Intensive storm water management, use of sustainable design practices, native plantings, local materials and state of the art children’s play area are key features of the park design. The design of the park structures is a collaboration between the Hord Coplan Macht Architects and Landscape Architects. The park just began construction.
