Project Description

FROM THE ARCHITECTS:

The project is comprised of the renovation of a circa-1930 Craftsman-style residence, a flexible-use 300 s.f. addition, a new 240 s.f. garage, and selective landscaping. With a very modest budget of $94/s.f., the design strategy focuses on careful editing of existing building elements in order to establish a more open floor plan that improves connections to natural light and garden views. The renovation encompasses three levels and a basement, which are unified through a clean white interior color palette that amplifies natural light while providing a neutral background for the client’s colorful art collection.

A large, fully re-designed kitchen opens up to adjacent living spaces through custom cabinetry and a configuration that maintains an intimate scale despite its size. A new glass-walled addition – used primarily as a quiet meditation space – is envisioned as a connected pavilion surrounded by a lush garden. Over time, new plantings will define a layered arrangement of outdoor thresholds that reinforce privacy.

New expansion components are clearly differentiated from the existing structure through a dark green color scheme and simplicity of detailing, while relating contextually through familiar materials, textures and massing.
