Project Description

Our clients, a couple with plans for a family and a love of food and cooking, were trapped with an unimaginative tract home kitchen. The kitchen offered a dearth of natural light, a lack of functionality, and for all its sprawling square footage, few usable workspaces and a tract home ‘style’. The couple often took meals standing up, rather than sit at the table floating in the neglected dining area.

With a few simple moves the Architect gave the owners a simply elegant, naturally lit functional space. The kitchen now offers several functional work surfaces, additional usable storage gained from the lower drawers on the cabinet wall (approximately 25% more storage capacity within a similar volume as the existing). The removal of the wall to the adjacent living room allows more visual connection when entertaining and additional daylight during the afternoon. The clients now make use of the dining area and have added counter seating for casual meals. Regionally prevalent solid pecan hardwood floors replace the nondescript ceramic tile and add warmth to the space and tie the material to Austin. The new frameless glass panel allows gentle eastern light to enter and gives a visual connection to the outdoors.

The new space is tranquil where it was dead, flows where is was disconnected and light where it was darkest. It has been transformed to become a wonderful environment for a growing family to cook and enjoy their meals.
