Project Description

A 4,000 square foot, full-floor photography studio situated in a newly revitalized Flatiron neighborhood was fully gutted for a growing family. Working closely with the client, we proposed a plan to suit their active lifestyle. The open and flowing space creates a warm, flexible home for a family with three children. The adaptability of the layout enhances entertaining for both small and large numbers of guests. A simple pocket door separates the private from the public spaces. In the private area a play area will evolve into a den once the kids are older. We provided ample storage throughout with full height built-in cabinets and a generous mud-room off of the entry vestibule. The living area takes full advantage of a quintessential Manhattan roofline view. This space is an open and fluid zone that frames the vista and embraces the light streaming in from the skylights and the southern exposure. The kitchen is centered around a large island that is the nexus for cooking, gathering and entertaining. The details are taut and tailored in contrast to the fluid floor plan. The materials are spare, neutral, and modern to match the client’s attitude and aesthetics, but they are also robust enough to withstand three active children. Consisting of white marble and dark woods, the palette was kept minimal, to create a clean backdrop for family life.
