Project Description
On June 8, 2017, Columbia University held a dedication ceremony for the new School of Nursing building designed by CO|FXFOWLE, a joint venture between CO Architects and FXFowle Architects.
FROM FXFOWLE:
CO|FXFOWLE won an invited competition for Columbia University Medical Center to design a new 7-story home for its School of Nursing. The design focuses on creating a bright, welcoming pavilion that anchors the Medical Center campus and offers students meaningful social connections internally while opening outwards to the neighboring community. The lobby features dynamic circulation—a series of stairs that extend upwards to the roof terrace and conveniently connects departments. The North and East facades of the building are dedicated to faculty offices, conference rooms, and break-out spaces, and are surrounded by a layer of etched glass that brings in diffuse light and creates a lantern effect for the building. The core houses clinical simulation labs, research centers, computer labs, and flexible office spaces for PhD candidates and visiting faculty. Readily connected to the main research floors, the penthouse includes student lounge and event space with a large green roof terrace for informal gatherings of students and faculty.
