Project Description
FROM THE DESIGNERS:
Cherry Circle Room is a bar and restaurant concept in the newly re-opened Chicago Athletic Association hotel. Land and Sea Dept. reimagined the iconic space that has served the building (formerly a private men’s club) since the 1890s.
Conceptually, Land and Sea referenced the building’s history of exclusivity, playing on themes of clubs and secret societies, but in a decidedly modern manner.
With creative direction from LSD, Doubleday & Cartwright designed an identity system that references fraternal organizations of the past, developing an icon system for the dishware, custom handmade banners, linens and more.
The building’s landmarked status presented many build and design challenges, forcing several creative workarounds. The original cherry wood walls, curving bar, drop ceiling and lower back bar had to remain. LSD companion company Mode Carpentry constructed historically relative elements, including a new, expansive upper back bar, which also created essential storage space. In addition to hundreds of bottles of spirits and wine, LSD layered the shelves with vintage art objects.
LSD worked with local clothing manufacturer Stock Mfg. on uniforms, creating custom, distinctive aprons and shirts for bartenders, kitchen staff and servers.
The space’s historical connections extend beyond the visual. Chef Peter Coenen’s menu of refined takes on regional classics are inspired by CAA menus from as far back as 1899, as are sommelier Andrew Algren’s wine offerings. LSD Beverage Director Paul McGee designed a cocktail program including a menu of historically inspired specialty drinks, the first being Jacques Straub’s Drinks, written in Chicago in 1914.
