Project Description
Set on a grassy stretch of landscape outside Bridgehampton, NY, this house was designed as a contemporary interpretation of the region’s vernacular architecture, customized to our client’s aspirations for the property. The building’s distinctive form references the saltbox, a traditional pitched-roof architectural style prevalent throughout Long Island’s Eastern End. The house is oriented so the long axes face north and south, with custom windows on the southern side that follow the roofline, providing ample natural light throughout the day. Sliding doors open onto a wide deck and face a pool proportioned to match the house. The building’s rectangular shape provides a cost-effective approach to design, allowing for an efficient construction and interior layout. Clad in a knotty cedar, the building will become grayer over time. Designed for environmental efficiency and to promote wellness, the house uses natural materials, including reclaimed pine planks. The house’s overall shape not only gives it a distinctive presence, it also helps it to endure the extreme weather conditions of Eastern Long Island.
