Project Description
This remodel/addition was designed to complement a 1968 house originally designed by locally acclaimed mid-century modernist, AD Stenger. Recognizing the historicism of the original Japanese-inspired design and being familiar with the original architect’s prolific work, which included an A-frame five houses away, the new design marries opposing impulses by adding a vertical, reinterpreted A-frame to the horizontal, low-slung original house. Vertical wood and large timber details throughout enabled the design to reflect its original Japanese-inspired roots while also capturing the low-tech design style of the original house.
The A-frame opens up at the roof to incorporate a roof deck with city views, and the vertical wood shading device at its ends mitigates the harsh morning and afternoon sun. Continuous epoxy-pebble flooring blurs the line between inside and out, and a bright orange laminate countertop reintroduces materiality from the home’s original era.
