Project Description

The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) has been a significant driver of tourism and economic activity in the city of Birmingham and the state of Alabama, serving as a venue for numerous concerts, conferences, and meetings.

The BJCC decided to renovate the second and third floors for the first time in nearly 30 years, a project that would revitalize these spaces. By renovating these floors, they also sought to improve their usage rates and revenue flow, ultimately bolstering the local economy.

Working closely with the BJCC, Ghafari provided comprehensive architecture and engineering services for the 56,000 SF allotted renovation space comprised of various meeting rooms, classrooms, a public lobby space, and a performance auditorium. We updated a number of architectural finishes throughout the space, designed new lighting and AV capabilities, and renovated the toilet rooms to reflect the modern style of the facility while complying with ADA regulations.

Working in close collaboration with the BJCC on all aspects of the project, from programming and planning to furniture selection, we delivered a modern, state-of-the-art renovation for convention center visitors. All work was completed while the building remained operational, which we helped facilitate through the phasing of project scope areas.
