Project Description

An elegant and deceptively simple solution provides universal access to the town’s signature 1913 public library, in the historic center and on Veterans Park. The neo-classical portico sits 12’ above the sidewalk atop a steep incline and multiple sets of uneven steps. Without altering the historic façade, a broad, level new walkway in the park leads directly to a double-height entrance for all patrons. Pathway lighting, bike parking, book drop, a site wall at seat height, signage, and a glass-covered canopy all welcome and enhance the community connection. An outdoor classroom area of level paving and grass steps surrounds the entrance and connects directly to the century oaks and the adjacent park.

A new elevator, accessible bathrooms, new accessible stairway, and future ground-level children’s library sit just inside the entrance. Alterations throughout the library improve accessibility. Bookshelves are removed and reconfigured in the main stacks, the circulation desk is expanded, and all reading rooms, meeting rooms, and the upper level gathering hall are easily reached for library and community activities.

Coordinated variances were applied for and granted by the MAAB and Massachusetts Historical Commission that balance universal access requirements with local and state historic preservation priorities. The new architectural stairway provides fully compliant access and allows the preservation of the historic architectural stair inside the main portico.
