Project Description

A low metal roof sweeps across the entry of this residence, terminating in an outdoor shower that penetrates through it and anchors the elevation. The conical shape was designed to allow a comfortably open interior space while diminishing the visual impact as it rises above the roofline, keeping it in harmony with the angles of the house. With a barrel-like steel framework composed of vertical supports and connecting rings, the shower also acts as a structural element with interior braces to support the roof and stabilize wind forces. Being located along the main circulation paths, it was important to be able to close off the shower entirely; red cedar boards with minimal gaps were attached to the horizontal rings, and a curved sliding barn door allows privacy. Inside, the conical shape forces the perspective up to the sky, creating an intimate, light filled experience that exists out in the open.
