Project Description
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
With a holistic vision to break the cycle of homelessness, this project, adds an additional 120-units to the 27-acre campus, a former Naval housing base that has been converted into supportive housing and services for more than 1,200 formerly homeless veterans and families. The project provides safe, affordable housing and access to afterschool programs, career training, and other social services which provide the skills, tools, and services needed to empower the residents. The 2-story community room serves as the link between the campus and the new building. The fitness center, which includes exercise equipment and a studio for yoga and dance classes, serves the residents and greater community. Laundry rooms, in highlighted volumes with adjacent roof decks, are scattered through the building to facilitate social interaction.
The hybrid building form addresses various site conditions. The building’s spine acts as a buffer at the campus edge while engaging the community with three intimate courtyards defined by the four wings. The building massing steps down reminiscent of nearby yards of stacked shipping containers. The fire lane, required due to the depth of the site, is an extension of the campus east-west pedestrian circulation. It provides access to all building and site amenities. The project has been certified LEED Mid-Rise Pilot Homes Platinum.
