Project Description

The design grew out of a series of challenging constraints, but from those restrictions came a beautiful home celebrating the elements that shape it instead of treating them as limitations.
The first challenge was to fit the extensive program on the site which was shaved by setbacks and bisected by road easements, leaving a thin slice of land suitable for building. The client, who struggled with mobility due to MS, was averse to ramps and elevators. Believing them to be ugly and utilitarian, he thought his only option was a single story home. Capitalizing on his love of sleek contemporary materials, a series of beautifully connected rooms showed him how graceful accessible circulation can be when celebrated as an architectural feature. The catwalks and elevator that connect the home are one of its most profound design moments and give the homeowner what he thought he’d never have: a beautiful Master Bedroom that captures a tree-house like view of the Puget Sound.
