Project Description

2011 RADA
Renovation / Merit

The quiet composition of this remodeled 1941 home betrays the behind-the-scenes interventions. “The most challenging aspect was coming up with a strategy that made the house look like it was a newly conceived home,” says principal Paul Mankins, FAIA, LEED AP. With an eye toward adding square footage and connecting the interior to the landscape, the design team reframed the gable roof at a higher pitch and added new windows and porches to create transitional spaces. The structure is covered in standing seam metal and tongue-and-groove fir. “I like the clarity,” one judge said. “It’s a completely different direction—absolutely unapologetic.”
