Project Description

F|DA was asked to redesign a kitchen and master bathroom in a French Colonial residence. The existing kitchen was tiny, cramped, and had circulation problems including a half bath accessed from the kitchen. A small eating area was adjacent to the kitchen and a circulation vestibule connected the living room to the kitchen, basement stair, and this eating area. We reconfigured the plan to create a small mudroom and closet, half-bath and pantry along the outside wall. This allowed the kitchen to become a larger, open L-shape. This newly configured space is a distinct room that is spatially linked to the living room, dining room, and family room, allowing the house to have a spatial condition of openness while still maintaining the traditional room relationship that allows the house to be true to itself.

On the second floor, F|DA combined an existing small hall bath with an existing office space off of the master bedroom to create a grander master bath and closet. We created a vestibule between a larger dressing room, with a custom vanity and bathroom. As with the first floor, the room design was based on the home’s original design of continuously linked, discreet spaces.
