On March 20, the Virginia Center for Architecture will kick off its Southern Exposure Lecture Series, which will feature prominent contemporary architects highlighted in the visiting exhibition “Southern Exposure: Contemporary Regional Architecture” (discussed here). Each lecture will address how these architects incorporate regional factors—climate, culture, materials, and labor—into their designs and how doing so can achieve buildings that use fewer resources and create a healthy indoor environment. Lectures will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the center in Richmond, Va.
Architect Marlon Blackwell will deliver the March 20 lecture, beginning with a signing of his book “An Architecture of the Ozarks—The Works of Marlon Blackwell” at 6:00 p.m.
On April 10 during Virginia Architecture Week, Ted Flato, FAIA of the firm Lake/Flato will give the lecture. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a special reception and a signing of his book “Lake/Flato Building and Landscape.”
The May 1 lecture will be given by the Rural Studio’s Andrew Freear, and the series will culminate on May 22 with a lecture by the principle architects of Mack Scogin Merril Elam Architects.
