On Friday, Hammel, Green & Abrahamson’s (HGA) board officially selected Tim Carl, FAIA, as its new CEO, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reports. Formerly the design principal for the Minneapolis-based firm, Carl will succeed Dan Avchen, FAIA, who has held the position since 1996. This movement within the employee-owned firm’s personnel is part of a long-term transitional phase, which was initiated over a year ago. However, when Carl was first approached, he did not jump to the opportunity, considering himself a designer before anything else.
“In the beginning [of] 2013, we began to do a CEO search and they asked me if I was interested, and I said, ‘No, I’m a project designer,’ ” Carl said to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. “For the past couple of years I’ve been leading our Arts and Education Practice in Minneapolis. Then they asked me again… and I met with some people… and began to see that there were some things I could bring to this role.”
A celebrated architect, he has been awarded several honor awards among state AIA chapters, and in 1993, he was named one of named of the Young Architects finalists for the Progressive Architecture Awards.
Carl’s award-winning designs, all featured in both the 2014 and 2013 Minnesota Honor Awards, include the new fine arts center at Macalester College, the renovations for the University of Minnesota’s Northrop Auditorium, and the American Swedish Institute.
