Today, the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) announced the launch of its “American Architecture and Landscape Field Trip” program for high school and community college students. The Chicago-based nonprofit organization, its members, chapters, and affiliated organizations will host field trips focusing on architecture, landscapes, urbanism, and historic preservation. The field trips, which will consist of tours, lectures, conferences, and other opportunities for experiential learning, are intended to educate students on the built environment.

An anonymous SAH member’s recent gift of $50,000 and pledge of an additional $50,000 will allow SAH to develop and implement the pilot program and establish outreach initiatives designed to engage students in the fields of architectural history and preservation.

SAH currently has planned three projects on the docket for 2015 and 2016. The organization will fund community college student groups to attend SAH’s next two annual conferences (Chicago in April 2015, and Pasadena/Los Angeles in April 2016). It will also provide the chance to participate in an archaeology dig in Chicago and offer one-day field trips full of lectures, tours, and conferences to students and teachers in cities across the country, including Los Angeles, Detroit, Buffalo, N.Y., and Savannah, Ga.
