The Master of Architecture (Professional), or M.Arch.1, degree program of Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art, and Planning recently was granted a three-year term of initial accreditation by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
The M.Arch.1 program’s initial NAAB accreditation period is effective retroactively from Jan. 1, 2009. According to the accreditation report filed by the NAAB’s review team, “a focus on the architect’s leadership role permeates” Cornell’s graduate architecture program, its curriculum reinforces the connection between architectural education and society, and its students are “highly engaged in shaping the purpose and identity of their academic community.”
Cornell’s M.Arch.1 program is a three-and-a-half-year course of study centered around six semesters of design studios, accompanied by training in visual representation, architecture history and theory, technology, and principles of professional practice. Designed to encourage students to develop individual research paths, the program culminates in a one-semester design thesis.
