residential architect‘s sister magazine, ARCHITECT, recently announced the winners of its 56th annual P/A Awards—each exemplifying progressive architecture applied to community, environmental, technological, programmatic, urban, and economic challenges. When the awards jury met in October 2008 to review entries, the economy was beginning its final fatal downward spiral. “The mood of the moment undoubtedly affected the decision-making process,” ARCHITECT’s introduction to the 2009 award winners muses. “The task at hand—to identify the year’s outstanding examples of progressive architecture—proved quite a challenge, given that jurors collectively bristled at the very term “progress.”
And yet out of their acute sense of the troubled economy and uncertainty about the future of architecture, the jurors forged a new understanding of “progress,” and selected the 2009 P/A award winners accordingly.
