Design Miami/ brings together galleries and coalitions from around the world that collect, exhibit, and sell furniture, lighting, and other interior pieces by architects, designers, and artists. Some of the work being shown is from contemporary architects and designers, while other items are key pieces from periods such as California Modern, Scandinavian mid-century, Postmodern Italian, 1940s and 50s French design, and Korean craft. In addition to the exhibitions from these galleries, Design Miami/ sponsors a series of design talks featuring top names in the fields of architecture, art, interior design, and fashion who will discuss their careers, projects, creative process, and artistic influences with attendees.
One of those renowned architects is David Adjaye, who is this year’s recipient of the Design Miami/ Designer of the Year Award. As part of this honor, Adjaye was commissioned to design a site-specific temporary pavilion for the fair called Genesis. The fair’s release says the architect describes Genesis as a piece of “giant architectural furniture” that combines structure, seating, windows, and doors into a single gesture. The pavilion can be used by Design Miami/ visitors as a place to interact or reflect before entering or after exiting the exhibitions. Visit the Design Miami/ website for a full list of events.
