New York’s Tribeca Cinemas is gearing up for the fourth annual Architecture and Design Film Festival Oct. 18 to Oct. 21, which will feature 25 films from around the world alongside discussions with filmmakers and design leaders, as well as tours of local architectural sites. The films range from two minutes to feature-length and are separated into 12 programs, for which attendees can purchase tickets.
Among the films: Louis I. Kahn-inspired ARCHITECT, a chamber opera in six scenes. Short film Building a Relationship comments on issues related to urban blight and redevelopment. Indie documentary Coast Modern spotlights Modernist residential architecture on the West Coast. The Lighthouse chronicles a team of young architects as they attempt to build a lighthouse on a remote Scottish island to show the different implications between building with CAD and building with your hands. Modern Tide: Midcentury on Long Island spotlights postwar architects and designers including Marcel Breuer, Horace Gifford, Charles Gwathmey, and Frank Lloyd Wright. And, not for the faint of heart, Spanish film Paraiso offers a view from the outside in—that is, what it’s like to wash the exterior windows of Chicago’s tall buildings.
