Today, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) released the experience areas in its revised Intern Development Program (IDP), which will go into effect on June 29, 2016. The six categories are: practice management; project management; programming and analysis; project planning and design; project development and documentation; and construction and evaluation. The subjects correspond to the six sections to be tested in the Architect Registration Exam (ARE) 5.0, which is expected to launch in late 2016.
The overhaul of the IDP, in the works since last September, involves a reduction of the current 17 core experience areas into six practice-based categories, previously spelled out in the 2012 NCARB Practice Analysis of Architecture. NCARB released a map (shown above) to illustrate how the current 17 experience areas will merge into the six new categories. The organization also plans to provide additional resources, including video webinars and blog posts. Last week, NCARB released a new tool to help candidates prepare for the new ARE 5.0.
The overhaul is NCARB’s latest effort to modify the IDP. In July, NCARB removed architecture candidates’ requirement to earn 1,860 elective hours, effectively reducing the commitment from 5,600 hours to 3,740 hours.
NCARB develops policies pertaining to licensing, but those policies are only enforced through the adoption by the 54 jurisdictional licensing boards. Most states require the IDP to satisfy experience requirements for licensure, but candidates must verify the specific stipulations within their jurisdiction.
