Yesterday, the AIA announced the election of three new leaders, including 2019 first vice president/2020 president-elect L. Jane Frederick, FAIA, of AIA South Carolina; 2019-20 secretary Jason Winters, AIA, of AIA Maryland; and at-large director Jessica Sheridan, AIA, of AIA New York Chapter/AIA New York. Frederick beat out fellow candidate William “Bill” Carpenter, FAIA, founder of Lightroom. Sheridan garnered more votes than candidates Rob Walker IV, AIA, and James Wright, FAIA. The position of secretary was uncontested.

A graduate of Auburn University, Frederick is the founder of Beaufort S.C.–based Frederick + Frederick Architects. She served as an at-large director on AIA National’s Board of Directors, director of the South Atlantic Region, and president of AIA South Carolina.

“To create a future with better buildings, better communities, and a better world, we have to be flexible, nimble, and seize opportunities to turn dilemmas into advantages,” Frederick said in an AIA press release. “As architects, when we are at our best, we don’t talk about the future—we create it.”

Winters is a founding principal of Annapolis, Md.–based Kezlo Group and an M.Arch. graduate from Syracuse University. He has previously served on the AIA’s Strategic Council and was president of AIA Maryland in 2014, and president of AIA Chesapeake Bay in 2008.

“I believe the secretary should continue to fulfill the vision of repositioning the Institute,” he said in the same release, “placing AIA as a robust professional organization with prominent leadership in all aspects of the built environment—past, present, and future.”

Sheridan, an M.Arch. graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, is senior associate at Mancini Duffy in New York. After three years as a New York regional representative on the AIA Strategic Council, Sheridan served on the AIA’s Board Knowledge Committee in 2018. She was also named an AIA Louise Bethune Fellow in 2018 and received an AIA Young Architects Award in 2017.

“We are experiencing a pivotal moment at AIA,” she said in the same release. “Connecting with our membership is more important now than ever. We need to be ambitious and proactive. The AIA must think boldly and aspirationally about our profession.”
