Last year’s sale of Dutch furniture workshop Rud. Rasmussen brought the designs of Mogens Koch—including the Dutch designer’s Shelving System—under the purvey of Carl Hansen & Son in Denmark and alongside furniture design notables such as Strand & Hvass and Hans J. Wegner. That hasn’t seemed to stunt the Shelving System’s popularity, which was first produced by Rud. Rasmussen in 1932. A trained architect, Koch designed the system in 1928 as a bookcase for a small room in his Copenhagen home. The modular structure’s six units can be arranged horizontally or vertically to meet space needs. Although it’s been replicated more than once in its 80-year history, the thin wood frame features dovetail and rabbet joins for improved strength and is available in oak and ash wood with soap, oil, or white oil finishes.
