With today’s January 2015 employment report, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) also released the first set of annual employment estimates for 2014 for architectural services, landscape architectural services, and engineering and drafting services. (The Bureau also released preliminary data on the number of jobs added in December of 2014 in each of these three industries.) While many of these sectors are showing signs of recovery from the Great Recession, none are yet back to pre-Recession employment.
Architecture employed 165,000 people in 2014, the BLS reports today. This is the most people that the industry has employed since 2009, but still not back to the decade’s 2007 heyday of 214,100 jobs in architecture.
Landscape architecture employed 31,500 people in 2014, which is a slight increase over 2013’s 30,300 jobs.
Engineering and drafting services employed 930,200 people last year, according to the latest estimates. This is close, but not quite up to, the employment level of 2008.
