Architecture for Humanity, along with partner Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), has announced its first design competition in three years, the AMD Open Architecture Challenge. The global competition will focus on three sites on three different continents for three different community organizations, each presenting unique design challenges: the Kallari Association in Ecuador, SIDAREC in Kenya, and Nyaya Health in Nepal.
Architects, designers, students and others are invited to design digital inclusion centers that will help bring connectivity and computing power to communities lacking access to theInternet. The technology centers will provide access to educational, social, and business opportunities, and take advantage of health-releated resources. The entry fee is $25 until December 15, 2007, after which increases to $30. Entries from developing nations are free; final deadline for entries is January 15, 2008. Competition entry fees will be awarded to the top entry for each design site. One overall winning solution will be built with funding from Architecture for Humanity as part of its 50×15 Initiative, which seeks to connect 50 percent of the world to the Internet by 2015.
