This month, the architecture industry is headed to Philadelphia for three days of lectures, meetings, and some real-life, business-card-swapping networking. What should you see during AIA Convention 2016?

The Barnes Foundation: Established in 1922 by American inventor and art collector Albert C. Barnes, The Barnes Foundation retains an impressive collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Modernist paintings, among them 181 Renoirs, 69 Cézannes, 59 Matisses, 46 Picassos, 16 Modiglianis, and seven Van Goghs. The Barnes Foundation was formed to “promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts and horticulture,” and thus, it includes The Barnes Arboretum, located separately from the art collection and founded in the late 1880s.

In 2012, the foundation’s art collection moved into a new, 93,000-square-foot building designed by New York–based firm Todd Williams Billie Tsien Architects|Partners. “To emphasize the founder’s commitment to education and the visual interplay between art and nature, the galleries now include a classroom on each floor, an internal garden, and vastly improved lighting conditions,” says the project description on the architect’s website.
