Nigel F. Maynard, a senior editor for residential architect and Builder magazines, was one of the jurors for Boral Bricks’ Live.Work.Learn student architecture design competition, which invited students to design live/work buildings using at least 70-percent brick on their exteriors. Partnering with the American Institute of Architectural Students and presenting the awards at the AIA National Convention, Boral Bricks donated a total of $10,000 in scholarships for the three projects selected by the jury. The winner received a $5,000 scholarship, while two semi-finalists each got $2,500 toward their tuition.
The winning design by Eun Grace Ko from Ryerson University is shown in the accompanying slideshow, along with those from the two semi-finalists: Brandon Block of Auburn University and Siqi Liu of the University of Texas at Austin. You also can read some comments made by the jury, which, in addition to Maynard, included Manny Gonzalez, senior partner of KTGY’s Santa Monica, Calif., office; Chip Clark, vice president of engineering services for the Brick Industry Association and licensed AIA industry architect; Nick Mancusi, president of the American Institute of Architecture Students; and Glenn Hennessey, director of marketing and communications for the Society of the Cincinnati at Anderson House.
