Yesterday, the AIA and the International Code Council (ICC) announced a five-year plan to collaborate on initiatives of importance to architects and code officials, including code development and compliance, sustainability and energy conservation, and architects’ building-code knowledge.
“Our combined membership, consisting of practicing design professionals, code officials, and the building industry representatives, supports the development of codes and standards that protect the health, safety and welfare of the public at large,” said AIA CEO Robert Ivy, FAIA, in a press release. “Through this significant agreement, both the AIA and the ICC agree to work more closely to achieve our common goals.”
Those common goals, as outlined in the announcement, include forming partnerships to develop international codes, increasing access to educational resources for code training, and connecting internal member committees and working groups to improve communication among the two organizations. The AIA and the ICC will also initiate advocacy campaigns and develop digital resources for issues relevant to architects, code officials, and other industry representatives.
