When John A. Holabird Jr., FAIA, died in February at the age of 88, a piece of Chicago’s storied architectural past died with him. The grandson of Holabird & Root founder William Holabird, he served as a partner in the venerable Chicago firm from 1970 to 1987. (His father also worked for the firm beginning in the late 1920s.) Earlier in his life, Holabird Jr. received a Silver Star for heroism in World War II, taught drama classes, and worked as a set designer for NBC and CBS.
