The Miller Hull Partnership announced Tuesday that one of the firm’s two founding partners, Robert Hull, has passed away at 68 due to complications from a stroke.
Hull received a B.Arch. from Washington State University. Following graduation he worked in Afghanistan for the U.S. Peace Corps and designed National Tourism Agency headquarters in the country, among other projects. He went on to work at Marcel Breuer’s New York office and then Rhone & Iredale Architects (now Iredale Group Architecture), before founding The Miller Hull Partnership with David Miller, a former classmate, in 1977 in Seattle.
The AIA named the partnership the 2003 Firm of the Year. The firm ranked #14 on ARCHITECT 50 in 2013. The partnership’s renovation work on the Odegaard Undergraduate Library at the University of Washington earned a 2014 AIA Honor Award for Interior Architecture, and the firm also received RADA merit awards in 2008 and 2009.
According to their website, more than a third of the firm’s work is public, and 70 percent of their projects include public funding. The firm notably designed the Bullitt Center in Seattle, dubbed “the greenest office building in the world,” which opened last April.
