Vegetated Roofing Projects

1 MIN READ

PEOPLE: developers, Gambone Development Inc., East Norriton Township, Pa., and Highland Development Group Ltd., a subsidiary of The Marcus & Millichap Co., Pasadena, Calif.; vegetation supplier, Sunny Border Nurseries, Kensington, Conn.; and project manager, operations manager and division manager, GreenGrid Weston Solutions Inc., West Chester, Pa.GREEN POINTS: Developers and local officials aimed to improve rather than burden the community with this 400,000-square-foot (37160-m2) shopping center. A key concern was storm-water runoff. Many of the city’s sewer systems are ill-equipped to treat contaminated runoff, so developers decided to cover the 2.3-acre (0.9-hectare) roof with a modular vegetated roof system. The modules are preplanted with engineered soil and hearty, drought-resistant plant media. The modules then are delivered to the facility and laid out on the roof. As much as 4,000 square feet (372 m2) can be installed in one day.
