New York–based design studio SOFTLab transformed the all–white New York City headquarters of Behance, an online portfolio site owned by Adobe, into a colorful workspace. When the studio was asked by Behance to create the installation, the central staircase connecting the two–story office became the ideal site for the structure. The abundance of clean, white materials in the office became the backdrop for the site-specific installation that acts as a three–dimensional stained glass window.
The four-pillar installation is built within the staircase, so it can be seen from anywhere in the space. To anchor the open office space, the piece is suspended from the ceiling over the stairs, by hanging its rectangular frame from the ceiling and fastening the middle, articulated by a circular void, onto a single light fixture with the same shape.
This strategic placement makes it so the structure casts colored light throughout the office. Mimicking Behance and Adobe’s brand palettes, the color transitions from red on one side of the staircase to blue on the other, with several swaths of bright laser–cut mylar netting plaited together by fasteners and intersecting interior bands​.​ To give the net its vibrant color, the studio attached photo gels to the material. The red and blue pigments were algorithmically generated​ to create a natural transition, and other hues were formed by randomly mixing secondary colors from the brand palette to complete this vibrant piece.​ Behance’s once all–white office now reflects the type of creativity seen by their clients and services.
