Photographer Marvin Rand Dies at 84

Architectural photographer Marvin Rand died Feb. 14, 2009, at his home in Marina del Ray, Calif. The cause was heart disease. Rand was an honorary member of the AIA, and throughout his career he worked with many famed architects, such as Louis Kahn, Cesar Pelli, Craig Ellwood, and Frank Gehry. Rand is known for his images of the Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood and the Hunt House in Malibu. His documentation of notable California architects Charles and Henry Greene and Irving Gill resulted in the books Greene & Greene and Irving J. Gill: Architect 1870-1936. Changing with the times, Rand taught himself digital photography while in his 70s. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; daughter, Vicki; sons, Peter and Paul; and two granddaughters.
